A Very Special Milestone: The First RDMA Black Belt, Maria Newman

A massive congratulations and well done to Sensei Maria who has become the first person to gain a black belt in Red Dragons.

We are immensely proud of Maria for the hard work and dedication that she has shown in preparing for her black belt. Hard work always pays off and Maria has really pushed herself and her black belt has been the result.

Maria told us: ‘I always knew that achieving my black belt was the ultimate goal, which at times was overwhelming. However, I’ve learnt that it’s about being focused, calm and just taking one step at a time.’

The black belt grading is very tough. Maria had to be in control of her mind. One of the most important tools that we have at our disposal is mindset. On the Saturday the grading followed a particular pattern and it was possible to focus and getting things done and counting them off the list. The Sunday part of the grading was a different story. Maria had no idea what was going to happen and how long it would go for. All she had to do was focus on the next thing, the next round, the next combination, the next exercise. Martial arts is a fantastic way to develop a strong mindset.

Well done Maria we are all very proud of you (She is already asking about the 2nd Dan).
